Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. Fatigue, muscle stiffness, headache, stomach pain and bloating are the common symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is also commonly identified as symptom. People who have symptoms of Fibromyalgia report problems with memory and are unable to concentrate on one thing for a long time. Alternative therapies can help in reducing many symptoms of FMS and Ayurveda therapy, in particular, offers a range of anti-inflammatory treatments for pain relief, reducing fatigue and muscle stiffness.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) sometimes also known and diagnosed as Myaligic Encephalitis (ME) is a serious long term illness that affects the body systems preventing sufferers from living a full and active life as they suffer severe fatigue, chronic aches and pains, headaches, depression and sleep disturbances. Ayurveda therapy can offer treatments for relief of those symptoms and getting to the root cause of the disease then adopting a holistic approach to lifestyle to improve health and wellbeing.
Post-traumatic stress disorder affects different people in different ways in response to a traumatic event. Symptoms can present as panic attacks, sleeping difficulties, depression and chronic pain, feelings of weakness and being numb as well as anger and anxiety. Many cancer sufferers find that some Ayurvedic therapies can help them cope better with cancer and its treatments. Particularly Ayurveda’s approach to touch therapies like Marma therapy and massage can help restore patients feelings of health and well-being. Authentic Ayurvedic practices of yoga, meditation and breathing techniques can help relaxation which in turn can be beneficial for people with cancer, lowering stress, blood pressure and managing anxiety.
Adapting to an Ayurvedic lifestyle can be one of the most effective ways of managing mental health. Preventing illness rather than treating it is at the core of Ayurvedic principles. By combining breathing techniques, yoga, meditation, medicinal herbs and body treatments, Ayurvedic therapies can help to restore the balance that is lost through mental illnesses like phobias, anxiety and depression.

Abhanyaga
Abhanyaga is the anointing of the body with specially medicated oil. This warm oil therapy can take a variety of forms of massage from simple Hand Touch Therapy with warmed herb or leaf infused oils to Marma Therapy, a very exclusive treatment focusing on the 108 vital points of the body and one in the mind. Dr Sreenath Nair (MCMA) prepares bespoke treatment oils from hand-picked medicinal plants carefully seasoned to work for each patient.
Abhanyaga practice restores balance in the body and enhances wellbeing and longevity way beyond the surface benefits of moisturising the skin:
- Improve blood circulation – Blood is effectively circulated all through the body expelling toxins from the blood.
- Activate Marma points – Prana (life force) flow is opened by balancing three doshas, and promotes skin to be softer, youthful and lustrous.
- Lubricate internally – Oils penetrate deep into the body and promote flexibility of joints, tissues and muscles.
- Stimulate the lymphatic system – Strengthen the lymphatic system, improve immune responses, stabilise hormones and improve physical and mental health.
- Pacify the nervous system – Create a state in which the body can deeply rest, enjoy deep, calm sleep, release stress and ground the mind.
- Detoxify the body – Oil based massage will attract other oils, environmental toxins and heavy metals to the surface of the skins pulling them from the blood for a detoxification process.

Marma Therapy (Marmachikitsa)
Marma therapy, originally known as Marmachikitsa, is a touch healing therapy that dates back to 1500 BC. Marma literally means the vital points in the body. There are 108 Marma points and according to the Marma medical system, one way or another, all skeletomuscular disorders, and illness are connected to the Marma points. The Marma medical tradition is well known for home remedies, herbal medicines, embodied practices of human wellness such as Keralan martial art known as Kalarippayattu and meditation known as Gati Kriya (Breath Restoration).
Marma therapy also restores holistic balance of body, mind and spirit passed to the Marma Vaidyas by the Sage Agastya. Marma therapy works by stimulating vital points related to particular ailments. It causes major shifts in the body and creates profound therapeutic impacts at a physical, emotional, and mental level and is a safe and non-invasive treatment which should only be undertaken by a trusted and experienced Marma therapist.
At Ayus we have not just one, but two practitioners descended from both these rich traditions of Indian medicine, Ayurveda and Marma therapy, where holistic practice is a way of life.
Lead clinician Dr Sreenath Nair (MCMA) specialises in the Marmachikilsa tradition using touch for a whole range of benefits. Read more about him here.
Together, they are concerned that today, the contemporary approach to teaching Ayurveda leans towards yoga, meditation and bought-in remedies, almost like fast-track leisure medicine. By contrast, Dr Nair and Dr Namboothiri’s classical time-honoured practices are known only to a tiny number of skilled, older practitioners.
As such, there are very few Ayurveda practitioners in the UK able to bring such authentic practice to benefit their patients, both online, in retreat and in private consultation. While Ayurvedic knowledge is positively focused on prevention rather than cure, there are specialist treatments available to help treat and alleviate the symptoms of certain conditions. In fact, Ayus Lifecare Clinic is the only place in the UK where Marma therapy is being practised in such a traditional way. As such, Dr Sreenath Nair (MCMA) has founded the UK’s first authentic Marma therapy centre.
Clearing the body’s pathways through Abhyana massage can increase vitality and flow to stimulate physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing which can also improve so many stresses and pollution of modern life. Just a few of the many reported benefits include:

Panchakarma
Panchakarma is a cleansing and rejuvenation process that focuses on detoxification and restoring vibrancy through purging and elimination, with careful full body cleansing to start anew.
Using a variety of 100% natural oils and medicines panchakarma balances the three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha through a variety of specialist treatments depending on the deep-rooted imbalances in the body. This can involve inhaling medicated oils to clear the lungs and nasal passages, or clearing the gastro-intestinal tract through herbal enema or therapeutic purgation.
Such processes should only ever be carried out by a hugely experienced Ayurvedic practitioner like Dr Sreenath Nair (MCMA) as the after purification process and subsequent diet requires careful planning to ensure long lasting success and re-establishing the balance so hard to find in modern life.
